Bert's Bar in Barbados has closed and been torn down
#1
This was Eugene Melnyk's bar and a regular place for Canadians, especially hockey fans, visiting the island.

And he didn't pay his staff or warn them. But it's apparently just renovations...and they are supposed to be completed by October 1. Pretty lofty goal for a complete tear down!!

I guess if you think about it, the bar wouldn't really be a priority for Melnyk. As a liver transplant recipient, he can't drink and has to stay out of the sunlight.

Back in the late 1980's my wife and I were vacationing in Barbados and happened by chance to catch a hockey game between Canada and the USSR at Bert's Bar. This was well before the Senators and Melnyk were known entities. It was a novel experience to watch hockey at an outdoor bar on a warm evening drinking banana daiquiris amidst palm trees with the sound of the ocean in the background.

In 2006 my firm held a national retreat in Acapulco.

I half-jokingly mentioned to my national department head in Toronto that i wasn't attending if the Oilers were still in the playoffs.

They firm actually had a special satellite/TV brought in and set up at the ocean bar at the Fairmont Princess where we were staying - I watched games 4 and 5 of the Western Conference final against ANA with the ocean waves crashing just steps away.

Game 5 was a hell of a fun night (series clincher).

I was there in 2009 for games 1/2 vs the Rangers. Eugene and Bert were both there for the game
When the Sens won one of the games in OT I ran around the bar screaming and gave Eugene a high five as I ran by him.
Made it home in time for game 3 in Ottawa too.

Would be nice if it was just renovations but thtA's not what I'm hearing from my family in Barbados.  Where did you hear this?  The link doesn't say so.

That's what it says on the bars website. I don't buy it either.

Came back from Barbados on October 15th.  While the building has not been torn down, neither does it appear that there are any plans to re-open.  There was yellow tape across the driveway and no activity.

So just to put this crap to rest:

Re-opened:

I noticed Melnyk was reported to be in Barbados so I checked this out. If he's into the booze again I'll be POed.
He's supposed to limit his exposure to the sun on top of that, because of the liver transplant.

Sister-in-law and family just go back in January. It is open but a very basic menu. Not the place it used to be.

as of Nov 26,2018---Bert's Bar is still standing but the entrance is chained off.  The old Abbeville Hotel next to the bar/restaurant is gone and there is a big empty field in its place.   No sign of renovation or reopening.  No lights. Where's Bert?
