Winning makes you more money... Leafs print money in the playoffs.

Short sighted moves to add marketable talent but which hurts your odds at the playoffs longterm might help you financially for about a year. Overall though, focusing on building a stable competitive team with a long-term focus addresses both financial and on-ice success.
