Okay. Even though we are a couple of months away from the trade deadline, a few teams have really fallen out of the playoff race. With the turmoil in Philadelphia and the train wreck in St. Louis and both teams stating that they are listening on all of their players, (save a few roster players and recently drafted players in the system which are untouchable).

Go ahead... Make YOUR Trades. Feel free to justify why you decided to, or don't. Build a LEAFS team that you feel confident about going into this years playoffs.

Go for it now?... Have at 'er!
Continue to build?... Fill 'yer boots!
Buy low and sell high?... Knock yourself out!
Blow the whole son-bitch up and start again?... You'd be nuts but, whatever!

This should be fun.

I'm gonna start by focusing on those two teams in particular. St. Louis and Philadelphia.

TRADE #1

TO ST. LOUIS: Nikita Zaitsev, Andreas Johnsson, Timothy Liljegren, 1st round pick 2019 (TOR).
TO TORONTO: Alex Pietrangelo, Jordan Kyrou. (St. Louis retains 1.25 million of remainder of Pietrangelo's contract).

Alex Pietrangelo is a legit top pairing RHD. His stats are down because he has been paired with Jay Bouwmeester who has been an absolute anchor on his relative Corsi. Pietrangelo has always been great at shot suppression and defensive zone coverage. He is also excellent with the puck and in transition. He can run a power play, kill penalties and be relied upon in all situations. Exactly what Rielly needs as a D partner IMO.

I included Jordan Kyrou in this deal because I have always loved his skill set. He can play all three forward positions and is still only 20 years old. (The Blues may balk at including him in the deal for those reasons and if that is the case, I'd be okay with removing him from the deal completely and going with the acquisition of Pietrangelo + the salary retention).

TRADE #2

TO PHILADELPHIA: Jake Gardiner, Jeremy Bracco, 2nd round pick 2019 (TOR), 4th round pick 2019 (STL).
TO TORONTO: Wayne Simmonds, Radko Gudas.

Radko Gudas, despite his transgressions in the past of trying to decapitate players is a tough, defensively solid RHD. He is not a top pairing D, but he would provide some much needed grit and toughness, and that is critical going into the playoffs. He still hits hard and can play a regular shift. I think he would be a great addition to the second pair with Travis Dermott. They would compliment each other with their styles of play. One year left on his deal after this one, just like Pietrangelo.

Wayne Simmonds would be a pure rental. He would be the perfect fit on the left side with Matthews and Nylander IMO. Aging and not as good as his early years as a 30+ goal scorer, he is still an absolute warrior. He can hit, he will fight, and still has soft hands. "Scarborough kid comes home for a chance at the cup?"

I think that a major sticking point in the potential deal with the Flyers would be working out a contract extension in advance for Gardiner. Philadelphia has a lot of RHD but very few LHD.

The Lineup

Simmonds / Matthews / Nylander
Hyman / Tavares / Marner
Marleau / Kadri / Kapanen
Ennis / Lindholm / Brown
Gauthier

Rielly / Pietrangelo
Dermott / Gudas
Hainsey / Ozhiganov

Andersen
Sparks

Anyways.... Have at 'er boys. Looking forward to your thoughts as always.
As you guys know I'm not a Leaf fan nor am I a Leaf hater.

Those are very fair trades that Trev is proposing. We're all guilty of having homer glasses on at certain times but that's a real fair trade for all teams.

Thanks 'Gunner. Gotta give something of value to get something of value. I'm sure I'll get destroyed within a few hours but... I'm only here for the entertainment value anyways. Cheers bud!
I’d rather target parayko.
No one wants Zaitsev, he has negative value. Although I know you added him for cap reasons.
Otherwise, that trade is fine.

I’m a fan of Gudas, but I think this is a bit of an overpayment here. And I’m not interested in Simmons.
I’d counter with Brown and a 3rd for Gudas.
Trev..i think you can add L.A and Chicago to your list as well..both are near the bottom with an old roster..pretty sure Quick,Doughty,Toews and Kane are not available but pretty much everyone else could be...might add some trade scenarios to your thread..

as far as your Gudas/Simmonds proposal...i'd try to grab Simmonds for a pick and B level prospect and i'm not up on what Gudas' value is but he is a guy we could use for toughness
The first proposal would be the more likely of the two, IMO.... although the Blues looking to get rid of one of the best defenders in the league is unlikely.

The Flyers would never get rid of most of their "toughness" unless the return is overwhelming. This trade is not that...

Fun to speculate though
I think you always end up overpaying in deadline deals. I prefer my GM do all their best work in Summer.

I love our talent but as we reach the one third mark of season, in my heart, I don’t think we are good enough or designed to go deep. I will take whatever comes and have management adjust in off season.

I know, I know....boring answer. My fear/frustration is that the NHL is not going to be officiated to have a Sault St. Marie Greyhounds NHL version be a threat to win the big trophy. Unfortunately, I am seeing whistles thrown away (which helps teams with less pure skill and speed) and I see many of our players (including Matthews) not coping with chippy games.

I really don’t see a move or 2 changing this outlook.

Yes I want to win the Cup, but I am prepared to just settle for being entertained more often than not with good hockey.

You could say I am throwing in the towel and maybe it’s true.

Nothing wrong with patience. As I had stated... I'm just here for the entertainment. Always cool to hear what other members of LeafsNation think. All good brotha'

Absolutely!

And I will enjoy ready what other people have to say.
I dont want to give up Johansson. He is built for the new nhl.

I don't think there is a package st louis would want if we are not including him kappy or nylander so its probably a non starter.

I dont think we have to get a homerun dman on this team like some do. I would be happy with a Tanev or similar. A methot type as I said. Someone who can play solid d and play with Reilly. Someone with some nastiness. Ya I like tanev
I agree CE..i just don't see this teams version this year going very far..i think once we are clear of Gardiner and Marleau's contracts they will be able to fill a position or two on the back end(and add some grit/toughness)..! deadline deals are fools gold..i prefer trades in December and in the summer..as you say..too much over payment in February

SK, I can’t remember where I read it this weekend but I heard Tanev has had a sharp decline in his play recently. I don’t know if anybody can substantiate it that report. I have not seen any Canucks games so have no opinion of my own.

Tanev is a shell of what he once was. I think the constant injuries have finally caught up to him. That being said... I would trade Jake Gardiner OR Nikita Zaitsev for him one for one today and throw in a 4th round conditional pick to do so.

19th.
To Edmonton: Zaitsev, Kapanen, Sandin and a 2nd
To Toronto: Nurse, Lucic(1.5 million retained)

Toronto receives 2 players with grit including a young Dman that could grow with the core.
Edmonton receives a top winger with speed that could keep up with McDavid. They could be great together.

Edmonton gets Lucic a fresh start, there has been rumours he requested a trade in the summer. Toronto also dumps the 5 years of Zaitsev under contract and with the salary retained those two players almost cancel each other out.

Wow, I think Kapanen is the best player in the trade, with Sandin showing potential to be the best defenseman in the trade.....hard pass as Lucic contract is awful. There is no fresh start for Lucic; he is washed and cannot keep up with the play. The only reason he is considered tough anymore is that all the enforcers who were beating him in fights are gone from league.

Sorry, I don’t like it. Maybe 6 years ago but not now.

That's too much. If it was not Sandin... I'd think about it. I'm super high on that kid. I think he is special.

Nurse is pretty good. I'd argue he's better than Kapanen. But I understand the not wanting Lucic. But he did in the past perform pretty good. And we need toughness so unsure how ppl think we will get it. I think Lucic at 4.5 has the potential to add some nice heavy checking and a big body on the third line. Could see him and Kadri playing well together.
And when you complain about the contract keep in mind we would lose Zaitsev and lots of ppl hate that one.
It's a chance of scenery for both guys. The salaries pretty much even out. But we add size and toughness.

The rest is Kapanen, Sandin and a 2nd for Nurse. He's pretty good. Plays a physical game. He's an upgrade on Zaitsev and realistically we aren't going to be able to afford Kapanen after this year so isn't the whole idea of trading someone like Kapanen to get a D upgrade?

Then maybe substitute someone else instead of Sandin. Brown? Holl?
